• "Jared was out there, swinging his club. He saw me and I knew if I didn't get out of there he was going to want to 'duel' with my axe or some shit. He's drunk. Somebody could get hurt. I didn't want that for tonight. He might accidentally club somebody, but also it would be SO tempting for me to take a shot at him. I had to duck in here."
• "What?" Chloe thought that maybe Nick was mostly joking. But there was something weird in the tone of his voice. Together there in the small, dark closet, his voice was all she had to go on. There was a little bit of something else in his voice too.
• "It just flashed before my eyes. Him swinging his club with that obnoxious, dumb-ass grin, at least half drunk, and calling me 'Axe Boy' or some shit. I could block his swings, and then he'd get a little rougher, and then one of us could slip up and somebody could get hurt. I didn't want a scene."
